USER-INTERFACE & DATA (MAPS / GRAPHS / TOOLS / CITIZEN & CITY FEEDBACK)
How important are these features to you?

Undo button which can be used if the player makes a mistake with any of the game’s tools, like in older SimCity games; and new Confirm dialogue boxes which halt the game momentarily and appear before continuing further with any action (e.g. terraforming, landscaping, laying new infrastructure) which will destroy any existing buildings or other infrastructure. The confirmation dialogue boxes would be optional, allowing them to be disabled if the player wishes. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

Upgrading the “Make Historical” feature of SimCity games, by creating an additional “Make Historical Zone/Area” Tool. This would allow the player to simply draw a boundary around an area - automatically applying the “Make Historical” feature to any existing buildings within, and preventing them from ever being replaced by the game. This would remove the need to individually query each and every building one-by-one and click the “Make Historical” checkboxes over and over again. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

Improving the Query Tools, by creating new tools and adding more information to the query windows for each. Terrain Query - like using the query tool on terrain in SimCity 2000; by clicking or hovering over any developed or undeveloped terrain, it would show details such as land value, air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, altitude, gradient and direction of sloping, etc. Zone Query - by hovering this tool over an existing zone we would see not only a tooltip style pop-up with the zone’s stats, but also a list of all of the *tags* / zoning options that have been applied; and by clicking the zone we would be able to change its *tags* / zoning options in the query pop-up dialogue box/window with full zone stats. Building/Lot Query - this would work in the same way as using SimCity 4’s query tool with existing Buildings/Lots/Transit-Enabled Lots, but featuring more information. Route Query - this would work the same as SimCity 4’s route query tool, displaying pathfinding routes and number of commuters to, from, or through wherever the tool is used; this tool should also show the number of commuters and the number of each vehicle type separately. Goods/Freight Query - using this tool on transport networks or buildings would work like the Route Query tool but instead showing the quantity of materials/products from each type of industry being transported, and the number of and types of vehicles transporting materials/products to/from/through where we have queried; along with the pathfinding routes. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

View Toggles which can be used to show/hide different features in our cities (like in SimCity games prior to SimCity 4). We should have individual buttons to show or hide all of the following independently: Developer (RCI) Buildings/Lots, Zones, Non-RCI Buildings/Lots (e.g. utilities, civic services, recreational), Transport Networks & Buildings. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

Improving the Data Maps by bringing back views from older SimCity games, such as the Population Density map; and adding new maps such as a Demand map (which will show demand for each building developer type (RCI) on a very local basis - rather than across the entire city area being played at that time). We should also be able to view all of the same Data Maps (in saved, frozen format) put together to show the wider regional data when in Regional View/Mode. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

A Road-Map Generator for our neighbourhoods, cities and regions which produces a detailed road map/atlas alike popular ordnance survey maps. By choosing an option for the game to generate a map for any area we wish (covering many individual municipal/city maps at once if we wish) and at a pre-chosen zoom level, e.g. local neighbourhood, local area/town/city, regional, world, the game would automatically generate the map. Once processed and displayed there should be checkbox options to show/hide anything (each route type, e.g. Motorway, A Road, B Road, Uncategorised; tracks; footpaths; city/town/village names; neighbourhood names; road/track/path names; railways; symbols/markings/colours for various building types such as shopping centres, factories, civics, public buildings, parks, recreation, ports, landmarks & significant buildings, built-up area, undeveloped area, woodland, etc.). When zooming out the pre-chosen setting before generating a map – some of the smaller and less significant different markings would not be added to the map or have options to show/hide, as the map would be over-cluttered and meaningless. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

An automatically-generated single-page Newspaper with a new edition available to read each month or so, appearing as a flashing indicator in the corner of the screen. It would feature humorous or informative stories about events that are happening across all sides your society, and public surveys. The newspaper should feature both local stories and surveys from the area of your region being played, and also significant regional stories. There should be a broad selection of stories that reflect the type of communities you have. Real names and stats should be used from your cities in the newspaper surveys including stories of negative events such as accidents, crimes and disasters and positive events and achievements too. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

Radio Broadcast Reports which feature reports similar to the Newspaper described above, except each report should be brief: one or two lines, and only for significant events. When the player has their audio switched on, the reports would play in between music tracks. A flashing small indicator would also appear like with the Newspaper, which links to a text version of the report – including a link for real-time events which will move you to where the event is happening or has occurred. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

An editor allowing complete Customisation of the Graphic User-Interface & Menus to reduce problems of menu-clutter, especially when new custom content has been added to the game. The GUI should be intuitive, with many different sub-menus/categories for each button/item - especially for menus which may have many features or items to choose from, such as the building tools menus. We should have a way to move, sort, and organise where any items appear within the GUI and add or remove new sub-menus/categories within existing menus/categories or sub-menus/categories, etc. An in-game search/index and goto function would also work very well for finding items on the menus. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

A Search/Index & Goto function within our cities which will take our viewpoint to any area, building, transport network, or other landscape or infrastructure feature within the currently played area which has been named. Within regional mode, using this function would move your view to above any municipality with that name. Within a global/world mode, the function would move your view to a region with the searched name. A key feature. I’d love to have this!

Planning Mode - where we can experiment with creating new developments. The game would be paused, with a saved backup when entering Planning Mode - where can use any of the game’s tools that we could use before, except there is no cost. In planning mode we can landscape or build a ghost version of anything we wish - without the risk of accidentally destroying our existing work, or wasting money where an idea could not work as we’d intended. In planning mode, everything we do or change would be recorded. The cost will still be calculated for everything we do, and displayed for us to see. If we are satisfied with what we have created and can afford the cost, we can choose to proceed with the plan. If we wish to save it for later or when it can be afforded, we can save the plan. If we wish to discard or restart, we can do that too. To keep Planning Mode manageable we may have to be restricted to working with an area no larger than a set maximum-size for each plan we create. A key feature. I’d love to have this!
